Adobe Photoshop Tips and Tutorials
Brightness / Contrast (nondestructively).
In the next section of the tutorial we will continue
with our original image using the s
ame marks (they
are really called targets) that we used earlier to
a
djust the brightness and contrast in our image.
Lets get to it.
OK, so far we have been able to find our
highlights, and shadows and use those locations
to adjust the color in our photo.
1.  Now we are going to make a LEVELS adjustment layer and use it adjust the brightness and
contrast of our  image.  First, click on the "
Create New Layer" icon at the bottom of the Layers
Palette.  When the menu comes up click on "
Levels"
2.  The LEVELS dialogue box will come up.  Now, just click and drag the triangular sliders (or c
use the scroll button on the mouse) inward toward the center.  Move the sliders so that they

are
just below the rise in the histogram (see image below).  Or If you would like you may click
on the "shadows" eyedropper (black one) and click on the t
arget labeled "1" - just like we did
in the Color Adjustment part of this tutorial.  Do the same with the "highlights" eyedropper and
click on the t
arget labeled "2".  This often has no effect on the photo but on occasion it will
have a subtle effect that might be just enough to make you say "WOW".  Nevertheless, you
will still need to adjust the sliders when you are done.
Now you have successfully adjusted the brightness and the contrast in the image.  Feel free
to move the sliders in a lot more or a lot less - whatever suits your tasted.  There is no right or
wrong way to do this.  Just what ever
you like!  Next up: Hue / Saturation.
Suggestions and feedback
are welcome!
