Yankee Mine
Leave the pavement behind for an unpaved 4 X
4 experience like no other. These 4-wheel drive
roads, developed by early travelers to the area,
cross the remote, rugged, and spectacular heart
of the San Juan Mountains offering visitors the
chance to explore the wild back country of
Colorado.
In the late 1800's miners created a network of
roads in their quest for silver, gold, lead, and
zinc. The towns they established along the way
are abandoned now, but some buildings remain
for visitors to photograph and explore. A high
clearance 4-wheel drive vehicle is
recommended, if not a must, for crossing some
of the 12,000 foot plus mountain passes.
Additionally, the Alpine Loop offers remote
hiking trails that access five of Colorado's
"fourteener" peaks (14,000 feet or more).
Beautiful mountain views, hiking and biking trails,
great camping opportunities, and abundant
solitude are some of the rewards for taking the
road less traveled.

These critters can bee seen in abundance most anywhere on
the loop. They hang out mostly in rocky areas and when
approached too closely will scurry off for cover only to poke their
head back out immediately. Fun and entertaining for everyone.

One of the more popular
sights on the loop is the
ghost town of Animas
Forks. Built in the late
1800's at an elevation of
11,200 feet it is a
"must-see".

Abandoned
Due to the high iron
content of the surrounding
areas a lot of the original
mine tailings have given
the soil an orangish tint.

Approaching Storm
The weather conditions
can change drastically and
rapidly...beware! This
photo was taken on June
28th 2006. This storm
brought a 10-15 degree
drop in temperature, sleet,
and snow.
